Overcoming Fear of Flying

Overcoming fear of flying is something that many people look to do. After all, having a fear of flying can make going on holiday turn into a huge ordeal. This means that many people simply won’t travel through the air or go on holiday when they want to.

Why People Fear Flying

When people develop a fear of flying it is often a learned fear, meaning that it may not have existed in the past. Often it can start after a turbulent flight, for example, or seeing news of plane crashes on the television. Understanding what it was that triggered your fear could help you to get over it faster.

The fear is irrational. If you looked at the statistics behind flying you’d realise that you didn’t have much to be afraid of. The main problem is that our imagination gets us thinking many thoughts of the worst case scenarios, and thinks about accidents that make you fear the journey.

Often, the fear also comes down to the fear of losing control, as if it’s only the pilot who controls the outcome of the flight.

Overcoming Fear of Flying

There are a number of self-help techniques available that can help you to overcome the fear. These include meditation and breathing exercises before and after the flight. Many people also try to visualize themselves on the plane, and try these exercises to help them get over the things that cause them to panic.

The best guide I have seen to overcome fear of flying is “Panic Away” – using natural techniques that will help to get over your irrational thoughts and let you travel the way you really want to.
