Anybody who has ever looked for a medical solution for anxiety disorder is usually told that there is no problem at all and that it is all in the mind. Yes, this is a familiar response to those seeking help from anxiety attacks; and the statement is always that the symptoms were just in the mind. Well, refuse to believe it.
Unknown to you, this was a doctor speaking from ignorance. It is common for old school doctors to make such statements however learned they may be. It is just common sense.

They might help to bring out a trigger that you weren’t previously aware of, making it easier to treat.
